Charlie's Park Upgrade
New Play Equipment Installed At Neighborhood Park
Property Donated To City In 2003
Sample Previous Coverage:

From March 15, 2004 City Commission Meet:

2. Consideration and possible action on acceptance of donation of property at 405 N. 9th St. for the purpose of establishing a public neighborhood park, to be named, Charlie's Park, and to direct City Staff to prepare the necessary plans and paperwork.

The city commission approved acceptance of the property (at 9th & Walnut) on the condition that the abstract provide the city a clear title to the property. The property is being donated by Curtis and Esther Leach in memory of their late son, Charlie Leach. It is hoped the park can be formally dedicated on April 8, 2004, commemorating Charlie's birthday. Mr. & Mrs. Leach plan to provide much of the equipment for this neighborhood park coordinating with city personnel on design and requirements. A half-court basketball court is planned along with benches, picnic tables and a sand box.

The installation of new playground equipment at Charlie's Park (at 9th & Walnut) was completed and ready for kids on Monday Sept. 10, 2012.
Less Shade But Safer -- After the city had purchased the play equipment but before it arrived. a large limb fell from one of the two large trees on the park property very near where the equipment is now placed. The entire tree (which was heavily damaged, like many Collinsville trees, in the 2007 ice storm) was removed by the city after assessing it health / safety.
FYI -- The city also purchased an "extra" set of play equipment (i.e. a two for one deal) as part of the Charlie's Park equipment purchase above. That equipment will be stored until a use is determined by the city or another local group buys it from the city. The school passed on the offer but it is now being made to churches. -- Ted Wright 9/15/2012
