As
the final seconds of Dylan Helm's match wound down, the anticipation on the
bench and stands rose and then erupted as the Collinsville Cardinal Wrestling
Team defeated the defending champs (Claremore) in the finals Saturday at Skiatook.
The state trophy was delayed by the record snow storms which began Feb. 1st,
so the team held the 5A Bracket in the team photo above pending arrival of the
trophy from OSSAA. The CHS team had not even been to the Dual State Tournament
(top 8) since 2005. The season is not over as Regionals & State for individuals
will take place over the next two weeks and the Cards are looking to crown more
champions before retiring for 2011.

Friends
& family could not get enough photos of the new state champs after Dual
State finals Saturday (above) but things were more subdued Friday as Collinsville
let Edmond Deer Creek get out to a 6-21 advantage before working back for the
eventual 31-27 win to advance to Saturday's Semifinal Dual -vs- Duncan at noon.
Team
meeting before Deer Creek matches Friday.
Coach
Wes Harding (right) with a state title in his first year as the Cardinal's head
coach congratulates the wrestlers (along with the CHS administrators).
Collinsville
was trailing by a team point (24-25) going into the final match against Claremore
in the finals. Dylan Helm responded with a confident 7-0 win to give the dual
(27-25) to Collinsville and the 5A Dual State Championship with the large Collinsville
crowd chanting and standing in the Skiatook arena.
Collinsville
had to wait for Broken Arrow to wrap up their 6A title (over Muskogee) before
the formal 5A presentation.
The
top 8 Dual teams in 5A and the top 8 in 6A met in Skiatook Friday on 4 mats
to narrow the field down to 4 each for Saturday's Duals. In 5A: Altus eliminated
Tahlequah; Claremore eliminated Harrah; Duncan eliminated Shawnee; and Collinsville
eliminated Deer Creek. In Saturday's 5A semi's Collinsville eliminated Duncan
while Claremore eliminated Altus from the torunament.
The
referee and Coach Harding disagreed whether Gary Wayne Harding had gained control
during this action in the scoreless regulation portion of his match against
a
2-time State Champ, Claremore's Calib Freeman.
Collin
Harrington had just turned his Duncan opponent on his back but there was only
1 second left on the clock and he got no points in a 0-1 OT loss (above).
Zach
Abkemeier pinned his Claremore opponent to jump start the finals for the Cardinals
in the opening match.
Jake
Barton's take down in the final seconds avoided an overtime and provided the
final team points for Collinsville against Edmond Deer Creek Friday.
Jacob
Smith pinned his Duncan heavyweight opponent (below) to change the team score
from 18-15 to 24-15 and helped spark the Cards to a 42-18 win and advance to
the finals.
