These are some of the elementary teachers gathered at Herald Elementary Thursday to learn about Common Core.

Martha & Danny from EDIT (Educational Development & Instructional Team) presented information on Common Core Standards to Collinsville teachers Thursday Jan. 4, 2012. Those standards will be in full effect by fall of 2014 when the current "No Child Left Behind" (PASS) standards expire. Forty-five states have committed to the new Common Core Standards which are still being refined. One of the goals of this session is develop plans to transition to the new standards gradually over the next 5 remaining semesters rather than a huge change in mid 2014.

More subject areas and grade levels will be included in the new tests. Student writing skill will be 40% of the new tests with 60% multiple choice. And the writing skills will be tested against formal English standards (not texting abbreviations and shortcuts). Some of the written test answers (which the students enter electronically) will be graded by software and there will also be trained human graders waiting to review the answers.

Teachers will need to focus on the current "PASS" standards which will be tested prior to Common Core implementation in 2014.

The middle school and high school teachers were together as a group at CHS Thursday to hear fom the EDIT group about Common Core.
After the EDIT presentation the teachers gatherered in smaller subject groups to discuss plans for implementing Common Core by transitioning in the 5 remaining semesters before it takes place in full by fall of 2014.
Congratulations Collinsville
