After sparks from a saw cutting the fence supports behind the old fence at the CHS baseball field sparked a grass fire, the CHS baseball team became spectators (recording the scene on their cell phones) and fightfighters (keeping the flames from their field) while city fire grass rigs worked to keep the fire from spreading to homes north of the ball field Wednesday.
Other than the grass, there did not appear to be any property damage or injuries. The old fence is being removed so a new fence can be installed. Several "lost" homerun balls were found after the fire. The CHS baseball team is currently practicing indoors with scrimmages to begin in February for the spring season. The CHS Baseball Diamond Dinner will be Saturday January 12th, 2008 7pm (at CHS) with George Frazier (Colorado Rockies) & Chris Lincoln (TV 8).
The smaller (south) softball field at CHS is showing the impact of the recent ice storm on the backstop netting.
