Let's
see
After graduating from CHS, I went to Oklahoma State University and took degree in Biology, then moved to Houston, Texas. I worked doing research in molecular biology for a number of years, then moved to New Jersey with a pro basketball player. After a few years of (surprisingly boring) life in the NBA, I'd had enough, so I moved back to Houston to take a job doing transgenic research. Had a son (Devon) in 1985 with a brilliant, funny, and very nice man (no, I was not married), with whom I remain close friends. Decided to go to graduate school in something (anything!) other than biology (hated doing research with animals-kept taking them home for pets). To my utter amazement, I was accepted into the graduate program at Rice University. I still don't know why. Anyway, against all odds, I received a Ph.D. in Cognitive Neuropsychology, and immediately thereafter was offered faculty appointment at Baylor College of Medicine. Somewhere in there, I finally decided to try marriage (to a British geologist), which proved only that I'm constitutionally unsuited for marriage. (But we did travel overseas a lot, which was fun). I extricated myself from that little wrong turn and focused on my son and my career. I don't know how good a mom I was, but Devon and I sure had a lot of fun! I also turned out to have a hidden talent for writing science, so in a publish-or-perish environment, I did okay. Once I was promoted up the academic ladder to where I wanted to be, I ditched the dress-for-success stuff and started wearing t-shirts and jeans to work (I draw the line at flip-flops), which improved life a great deal. Things got even rosier when my wonderful son graduated from Loyola University and moved back to Houston to take a good job. At present, I live in a little house in Houston, and may have one the best jobs in the world: I'm a research cognitive neuroscientist, so I sit around all day and think about new ways to explore how the brain works and how differences in people's brains cause differences in their behavior. Of course, academics and educators are among the worst paid professionals on earth, but it seems like a pretty good trade-off to me. Gerri Hanten (6/8/2010) |

Hi
Ted,
Boy, I was sooo unhappy to miss Saturday! Turned out to be a rather emphatic case of food poisoning (not from anything at Joyce's!), and I was down and out for the next 2 days. I am very glad for the chance to see many people on Friday, though, and Diana and Jill gave me updates on some people I had missed. Jackie Ashby had ended up with my junior year yearbook, which he passed on to Diana to give to me (we were in the same hotel), which was terrific. It was great to see you, and I'm so grateful to you for your wonderful photos and bios! I'll definitely want a CD... Thanks again for everything, Gerri ===============
