Oklahoma Legislative Session Report
State Representative Earl Sears "Frustrated" With "Worst Legislative Session"

Rep. Earl Sears

Earl Sears started his presentation to the Collinsville Chamber Thursday with an apology for his lack of attendance at Collinsville events the last few months (the result of illness and death of his parents). This legislative session was Sears' 11th. He has one more year to serve this district before he is term limited.

Rep. Sears called this Oklahoma legislative session the "worst" he has experienced and stated his "frustration" that the legislators did not work together (until the last week of the session) to solve the state's deep budget crisis.

"The only way to right the ship is to increase revenue", Sears stated, seeming to break from his Republican party hard line position. "We can't gain with cuts only" after years of cuts and budget failures.

Rep. Sears said he had no way to predict what the Oklahoma Supreme Court would decide Tuesday (August 8th) but said it was likely a 50/50 chance there would be a special legislative session if the fee-vs-tax increase question throws out gas, tobacco, new car sales "fees" added in the last week of the session.
The next monthly luncheon meeting will be September 7th and the chamber board will meet August 17th. The chamber will also be helping welcome teachers back to school with appreciation breakfasts at each campus August 15th.
