Local Law Enforcement Benefits from Cherokee Car Tags
CHEROKEE CHAT
Week of January 26, 2014
By Cara Cowan Watts

Since Fiscal Year (FY) 2009, former Councilman Buel Anglen, myself and Councilman Lee Keener have allocated $186,978 of Cherokee Nation car tag money to Tulsa and Rogers County law enforcement agencies.

Tulsa County agencies include Skiatook, Collinsville, Sperry and Owasso Police Departments. Rogers County agencies include Claremore, Talala, Catoosa, Oologah, Verdigris, Chelsea and Inola Police Departments as well as the Rogers County Sheriff.

In FY2009, Tulsa and Rogers County law enforcement had $42,469 available to spend. In FY2010, $32,539 was generated by Tribal car tags. In FY2011, $25,263 in Tribal car tax revenue was raised by Cherokees for local police. In FY2012, Rogers County saw their funds doubled when I won the apportionment lawsuit proving more Cherokees lived in Rogers County than previously thought and $52,256 was available. In FY2013, we lost money when the current Administration forced Cherokees with a bad address to be removed from the population count for Rogers and Tulsa County. Only $34,449 was available for law enforcement.

Lost money for local law enforcement was just one negative impact of Cherokees with the wrong address on their Tribal Citizenship or Blue Card.

Examples of projects funded by Cherokee car tag tax revenue includes bullet proof vests, police vehicle lights, video cameras, computers, police cars, tasers, filing systems, radar guns, printers, radios, storage barns, evidence rooms and much more. Cherokee car tag money has often filled unmet needs for your local law enforcement to make our communities safer.

Note, Verdigris Police put their funds towards a tornado siren in FY2012 and Claremore Police received additional monies when possible for their voluntary coverage of Federal property which the Claremore Indian Health Service (IHS) Hospital sets on which creates a Federal enclave.

Affordable Care Act Assistance for Federally-recognized Tribal Citizens
CHEROKEE CHAT
Week of February 16, 2014
By Cara Cowan Watts

Are you confused about what to do with the Affordable Care Act (ACA) and are a citizen of a Federally-recognized Tribe or receive services from IHS or a Tribal Clinic?

If you are like me and have begun gathering everything you need for 2013 taxes, you should be planning on filing for the new requirements concerning the ACA.

For personal assistance, go to your local Cherokee Nation Health Care Facility such as Vinita, Salina, Bartlesville, Nowata, Jay, Stilwell, Muskogee and Sallisaw Clinics as well as Tahlequah Hastings Hospital all ran by the Cherokee Nation. Ask to speak with by phone or make an appointment with the facility's Patient Benefit Coordinator concerning the ACA.

Claremore Indian Health Service (IHS) Hospital is ran by the Federal government. Benefit Coordinators keep a table in the main lobby stocked with pamphlets and brochures as well as educate clinic patients. Every quarter, Claremore IHS holds patient fares to promote Veteran Affairs, ACA, SoonerCare and Medicare Part D. Claremore IHS has 6 Certified Application Counselors to assist patients and answer questions. For more information, contact IHS Benefit Coordinators Gloria Smith at (918) 342-6607 or Sheila Dishno (918) 342-6240.

For the online American Indian Exemption Form, go to https://www.healthcare.gov/exemptions/.

For additional American Indian information on the ACA, go to tribalhealthcare.org or nativeexchange.org.

At some point, both Claremore IHS and Cherokee Nation Health Services (CNHS) facilities may be able to print a letter off for you from patient records which document your IRS Exemption from ACA.

If your goal is actual health coverage, I recommend you sign up for the ACA and get insurance as IHS nor CNHS guarantee your health care will be funded and are almost always short on funds and services.

If you have questions, issues or concerns about the Cherokee Nation government, please email me at cara@caracowan.com or write me at P.O. Box 2922, Claremore, OK 74018.

Hi all!
For any teachers who would like to take advantage of the learning opportunities at the community garden please contact me. Everything is supplied for classes and I would be happy to bring seeds and supplies to individual classes as well as talk to student about the garden, and help them grow food throughout the spring. Each class can have they're own raised bed and support from myself and the Extension office to ensure success and a great learning opportunity. I currently have 20 raised beds built. It's time to start thinking about spring!
