CHS Football -vs- Grove
Double Overtime Win For Cardinals For Homecoming
14-14 End Regulation
Sallee Field was packed with a nice Homecoming crowd on a warm dry Friday evening just hours ahead of rain and a cold front that rolled in early Saturday morning.
Grove scored the only first half points (one play after this one) at 5:49 in the 2nd quarter. Grove's long scoring drive started at their own 14 after a Shawn Koscheski punt. Two long plays accounted for much of the yardage. Roc Robbins was injured during this drive.
Both bands performed during halftime. The Collinsville band will perform at their first contest Saturday at Bixby (Oct. 5th).
Grove started the 2nd half with the ball and drove to the Collinsville 3 yard line before missing a field goal that would have put them up by 10 at 5:43 in the 3rd quarter. Instead Collinsville took over at the 20 and started a nice drive getting near Grove's goal before a fumble had Grove with the ball at their 8 yard line. Two plays later (above) Marcus Tillman (#24) recovered a Grove fumble at the 15 to resume the Cardinal drive.
T.J. Johnson (#6) nearly had the first Cardinal TD on this pass from Shawn Koscheski but was interfered with and the half the distance penalty placed the ball at the 7 yard line.
QB Shawn Koscheski (#1) covered the final 7 yards for Collinsville's first points with 1 minute left in the 3rd quarter placing the ball on the goal line as he went down. Sergio Perez's kick was good for a 7-7 score.
Cardinal Defense
Parker Brown (#55) nearly had an interception on this Grove pass (that was tipped at the line of scrimmage by another Cardinal lineman) but it fell just a few inches out of his reach. Grove had to punt a play later and Brandon Lowe fair caught the punt at Grove's 49 on the last play of the 3rd quarter.
Shawn Koscheski (#1) started the 4th quarter with a 49 yard keeper to put Collinsville in the lead at 11:07 in the 4th requlation period.
Sergio Perez (#9) with the PAT kick for a 14-7 score.
Keenan Hamilton (#20) got the Cardinals out the 46 yard line (on a Koscheski pass from the 25) about mid-way in the 4th quarter after Grove had tied the score at 14-14 on a 57 yard TD at 7:41 in the 4th. The drive stalled but it looked momentarily like Collinsville would regain the ball after Koscheski was roughed on the punt but the foul was waived off as the punt had apparently been partially blocked before he was hit with 5:02 left in regulation.
This was Shawn Koscheski's last play of the evening as he picked up 10 yards and a first down to the 30 with about 3 minutes left in the 4th quarter. He spent the rest of the evening with his shoulder iced and Brandon Lowe took over the quarter back position (with pre-season injured Zane McElroy still a week or so from a possible return).
Lowe and the Cardinals nearly completed the drive started by Koscheski driving to the 5 yard line above. Ryan Haymaker (#25) carried from the 10 to the 5 with just 8.9 seconds left in regulation.
Collinsville came just a few inches short of a win in regulation as Sergio Perez's field goal attempt hit the cross bar and came back towards the field instead of bouncing over.
Grove attempted a long pass with just 4 seconds left in regulation play (from the 20) but it fell incomplete with pressure from Cole Keim (#67) and Jake Douglass (#56). Regulation play ended with the score knotted at 14 each.
Grove scored on their first play in the first overtime (a 10 yard pass). Collinsville was down to their last chance (above, after overcoming a holding penalty to reach the 6) before this Brandown Lowe (#2) pass to T.J. Johnson (below).
T.J. Johnson (#6) has left his defender behind and is waiting for the 4th and 6 Brandon Lowe pass to arrive in the first overtime.
T.J. Johnson (#6) made the catch and put 6 points on the board and when Sergio Perez added the extra point the 21-21 score sent the teams to a second overtime.
Collinsville had the ball first in the second overtime and wasted no time as Brandon Lowe (#2) with an outside block by T.J. Johnson, scored on a 10 yard keeper on the first play. Perez's kick put Collinsville up 28-21.
Grove was down to 4th and 6th on their last chance in the 2nd overtime but came up empty as T.J. Johnson intercepted at the goalline to preserve the Cardinal win. That gives Collinsville a 3-2 record for the season. The Cards travel to Tulsa next week.

Midnight Friday Update: I have 41 photos submitted to Tulsa World for their slideshow format (which will also take them some time before they are viewable) ... and I will now shift back to selecting those to go here on cvilleok. I will likely skip cross country, the parade and the royalty for now and start the football page first ... -- Ted

Note: I have the Grove football page nearly complete and online (1:45pm Sat) ... but am having trouble finding the slideshow on Tulsa World
