CHS Football -vs- Guthrie
3rd Round 5A Playoff Game
At Sapulpa (Neutral Site)
Unbeaten Guthrie Ends Collinsville's Remarkable Season
A huge Collinsville Cardinal crowd made the Thanksgiving holiday weekend trip to Sapulpa to cheer on Collinsville in the 5A Semi-Final Playoff football game against the unbeaten Guthrie Blue Jays. The Cardinal's hope of a first ever trip to the state finals next week looked promising as the first quarter unfolded but slowly dimished as the remaining quarters played out. In his word to the team after the loss, Coach Kevin Jones said that Guthrie had been there 6 of the last 8 years and we are here for the first time in 20 years. To the seniors coach said "Thank you for leading us here ... we can build on this". "We knew we needed to play a great game ... and we didn't." The Cardinals end the thrill-filled season with a 10-3 record.

Guthrie got ball first but Collinsville held them without a first down and forced a punt to the Cardinal 26.
Guthrie jumped offside a few times giving Collinsville a free 5 yards but also leaving Cardinal lineman on their backs. This one got the Cards to their own 46 on their first possession.
Zane McElroy (#4) reached the Guthrie 36 yard line on this first possession keeper.
From the Guthrie 33 (on the Cards first possession) Guthrie intercepted this McElroy pass at the 9 yard line at 5:58 in the first quarter.
Collinsville held Guthrie to another 3-and-out and forced a punt that reached mid-field for Collinsville's 2nd possession start.
Ryan Haymaker (#25) reached Guthrie's 13 yard line on this 2nd possession run.
Austin Roberts (#23) took a short McElroy pass and ran it into the endzone for the first score of the game.
Austin Roberts (#23) had Collinsville up 6-0 with 2:32 left in the first quarter from 11 yards out.
Sergio Perez kicked the extra point for a 7-0 Cardinal lead. Guthrie ended up with Perez' kickoff at their 13 but moved 87 yards to tie the score at 7-7 early in the 2nd quarter on their 3rd possession of the game.
Collinsville began their 3rd possession at the 20 following Guthrie's kickoff that reached the endzone (as did all but one other).
After their first quarter success Collinsville seemed to be fighting uphill as they mostly lost the field position battle. This Zane McElroy's punt from the endzone only got out to the 30 yard line. Guthrie gained very little before attempting a field goal that hit the upright and kept the score at 7-7 at 5:41 in the 1st quarter.
Tyler Forest (#81) couldn't prevent this Guthrie 25 yard TD pass at 3:27 in the 2nd quarter as they took their first lead at 7-14.
Guthrie had added 2 more touchdowns by this point in the 3rd quarter (a 13 yard pass 26 seconds before halftime and 17 yard run at 9:16 in the 3rd quarter) when Collinsvile recovered a fumble at their 20 (above) to briefly slow the Blue Jays.
The Collinsville Band was small but mighty as their numbers were down due to prior holiday travel plans.
T.J. Johnson (#6) made a nifty one hand snag of this McElroy pass to reach Guthrie's 18 yard line late in the 4th quarter after the Cards were already down 7-45.
Tyler Forest (#81) caught this 18 yard TD pass from McElroy with 1 minute left in the game. The extra point play was unsuccessful and the final score was set at 13-45.
Note: The majority of my playoff football photos are extremely dark as I accidently slipped over to the daylight setting on my camera early in the 1st quarter. I'll try to salvage a few and build a partial page. -- Ted 12:30am Sat
