2013 Oklahoma Heritage Scholarship Competition ... & Other Opportunities

This year the Oklahoma Heritage Association is offering more than $4,000,000 in scholarships to high school students who have paid attention in their Oklahoma history classes. In the Oklahoma Heritage Scholarship Competition, 9th through 12th grade students take a test on Oklahoma history, geography and our people. Those with high scores in each county receive a $1,000 cash scholarship or tuition grant to an Oklahoma college or university. All counties have at least seven scholarships available.

The 2013 competition will be held Saturday, March 30 at various locations around the state. The registration deadline is Wednesday, March 20.

FREE Field Trips for the 2013 Spring Semester

Thanks to generous sponsors, the Gaylord-Pickens Museum is offering FREE FIELD TRIPS during the 2013 spring semester. The Free Field Trip program includes free admission to the Museum and the teacher's choice of a free lunch for each student or a stipend to help with transportation, in the amount of $4 per student, Field trip spots are filled on a first-come, first-serve basis. $10,000 Nichols Scholarship applications due March 1

The Association annually offers the $10,000 John W. and Mary D. Nichols Scholarship to high school seniors. Students may be nominated for this scholarship by teachers or administrators not related to the student. The scholarship is based on the student's demonstrated knowledge and appreciation of Oklahoma history, as well as academic achievement, citizenship and leadership. As the name implies, the scholarship is made possible through the generosity of the late John and Mary Nichols.

A teacher asked her 140 seventh grade students, "What are you looking forward to in 2013, and how can the adults in your life best help you with this?" The resulting answers provided a fascinating set of small ways teachers, parents, and mentors can help kids in 2013.
