National Teacher of the Year: Alice Wilder

Alice Jumper Wilder was recognized as NIEA 2011 Teacher of the Year at the annual NIEA Convention Banquet, Saturday, October29, 2011. Alice is a full blood Cherokee and speaks Cherokee fluently. In fact this was her first language. Alice has taught Cherokee Language in the Collinsville Schools for the past several years. She also teaches children and adults at the Victory Cherokee Community Building. Alice was certified as a Cherokee Instructor in 2009. Alice does not want her native language to become extinct and her hope for the future is that her children, grandchildren and students will learn the language and pass it on to their families and communities. Congratulations Alice for a job well done!

Fourteen members of the Collinsville Home Representative Club met the evening of November 1 for their annual White Elephant Sale - which benefits Newborns In Need. Reports of the recent garage sale were given, and a recycled "fun" trophy was presented to Louise Brazeal for efforts above and beyond the call of duty, relating to her assistance with the sale.

Wilson Elementary "Kindness"

Wilson Elementary students study new character traits every month that will help us to be good students and citizens. During the month of November, our students are learning about the character trait of KINDNESS. Kindness means: being a friend; showing sympathy or understanding. We have a favorite quote about kindness - "It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice." (Author unknown). We plan to work on random acts of kindness throughout the month of November. -- Submitted by Lee Ann Due (11/4/2011)

The first and second grades chose students from each class who demonstrated kindness during the first week of November.

1st Grade -- Abbey Stamper, Kristen Cummings, Natalie Norris, Kynzie Christian, Kristen Hall, Michaela Peacock, and Kadence Burress

2nd Grade -- Front row (l-r) Alex Caton, Traxton Battenfield, and Matthew Ball
Back row (l-r) Alexis Gregory, Haylee Schuler, Abby Jones, Devon Smalygo, Madalyn Aunko, and Kadence Parker
