Memorial Will Charge Admission in 2012 (For First Time in 73 Years) |
For release before
Jan. 1, 2012
When the doors of Will Rogers Memorial Museum open January 1, visitors will be paying admission. For the first time in the 73 years since the museum opened Nov. 4, 1938 a charge has been established.
Admission charges approved by the Will Rogers Memorial Commission are: Adults, $5; Seniors (62 and older), $4; Active Military, $4; and Children (17 and under), Free. Group rates for 10 or more are $4 each.
Charges will help build sustainability of the museum and give us further opportunity to address deferred needs, said Steve Gragert, executive director of the Will Rogers Memorial Museums.
Establishment of thecharges came after months of discussion, research of other museums and study.
Both the Commission and the Rogers family (Kem Rogers, Will Rogers grandson serves on the Commission) recognize the need to find additional means of support, Gragert said. To avoid admission charges from being a burden on families, children will be free.
Another option is participating in Friends of Will Rogers. Family participatation is $45 a year, which includes free admission, discount in Museum store and other benefits.
(Editors note: Will Rogers Memorial Museum in Claremore and the Will Rogers Birthplace Ranch at Oologah are open 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., 365 days a year. Admission to the ranch is still by donation.)
