Neighborhood Dogs Running Loose
Hi Ted,

I don’t know if you will mention this or not, but I have to say that lately the amount of dogs running loose in my neighborhood is increasing. I walk my son Kevin’s dog Slugger almost every evening, & I am constantly being chased by dogs not fenced or leashed. I walk from 17th & Oak, down to 13th & Walnut & all around this general area. I thought I saw a position opening for Animal Control Officer, they might want to check this out. I am constantly detouring if I can see the loose dog before they see us, if not we start running when they come charging us. It does raise the heart rate, but not the intended cardio I’m looking for.

Thanks for all you do,

Karen Phillips (Sept. 17, 2010)

Middle School Science Grant
Ted,
We received a K20 grant for $40,000 for our science department and the teachers involved will be involved in professional development on Sept. 22 all day at the Middle School. If you would like to stop by you may. Later the teachers and students will be using the FOSS science kits for experiments and I will also let you know that schedule. I will be attending a conference on Sept. 22 & 23 in Norman for this same science grant. I will bring back additional information for you. If you are interested let me know.

Loose Dogs Followup
Hi Ted,

As a volunteer with Ward-Wiseman Animal Haven, I just wanted to respond briefly to Karen's concern about loose dogs running around, which is completely justified. Section 4-102 of the City Ordinance reads"It is unlawful for any person having control of any animal, except a cat but including fowl, to allow or permit the same to run at large within the corporate limits of the city." We do in fact have a new, very friendly ACO that was just hired on with the city, but he keeps regular hours like many of us on Monday through Friday. If it is after 5PM, you can still call the police department to report any animal you feel threatened by. The number is the same for either the ACO or CPD: 371-1000. Make sure to note some general features of the animal (color, approximate size, collar?, etc.) and where you saw it last.

One thing Karen mentioned was that she runs away if the dog comes charging. While I am in no way a trainer or an expert, I would recommend against running from the animal unless you absolutely have to. If it's friendly, it may think you are playing and keep chasing you. If it's mean, it might think you would be a tasty snack and keep chasing you. I have found, in many circumstances, that if a dog is coming toward you, you can yell "GO HOME", clap your hands and/or stomp your feet and it will give the dog pause or scare it away. You could also carry a small bottle or spray bottle of water with you and spray the dog if it gets too close. If this happens a lot, you might want to consider purchasing a cheap noise-maker or dog whistle or visit the pet store for other ideas. It is definitely the owner's responsibility to control their animals, but unfortunately, as you have seen, it doesn't always work out that way. Stay safe!
