Ted, In regards to your coverage of the Chamber of Commerce meeting, your article titled "Bad Idea:--State Question 744 gave only the opinions of the opposition. I'm hoping you will entertain a view from someone in support of the state question. Oklahoma is currently 49th in the nation in what we invest in our students. Oklahoma kids are not getting the same educational and professional opportunities as students in neighboring states like Arkansas and Texas. This is the reason that over 250,000 Oklahomans signed an initiative petition to put SQ744 on the ballot in November. SQ744 takes the politics out of education funding so that Oklahoma students have access to the resources they need to be successful. SQ744 does not raise taxes, and it does not cut funding to other state agencies-- it simply requires our legislature to prioritize better. There are billions of dollars in wasteful spending at the Oklahoma Capitol. For example, our legislature recently spent $18 million on a rocketship company in Wisconsin that immediately went bankrupt. There are over $2 billion in wasteful tax incentives. Did you know that our state legislators are the highest paid in the region? The list goes on and on. This nonsense about cutting government services in order to pay for SQ744 is ridiculous. The opposition has been using these silly political scare tactics for months, but Oklahomans are not buying it. Twenty-nine percent of Oklahoma students in public schools will never receive a high school diploma. Think of how much money we are losing both in the education budget in in criminal and corrective services for those dropouts. If we decrease the male dropout rate by just 5%, we will see an increased $96 million in revenue. We should expect to see significant economic growth from SQ744, just as every other state has when they have invested in education. Candidates come and go, but SQ744 will be a long-term investment in Oklahoma's economy. How can we afford not to pass SQ744? I encourage you to vote YES on State Question 744 on November 2nd. Sincerely, Cheryl Hewlett http://www.yeson744.com/ |
I'm happy to offer the other side of this issue, but will also take the opportunity to add my personal opinion which is: "a bad law for a good cause is still a bad law". If it had specific objectives (in the law) other than spending more money it might be more acceptable. If we are trying to solve waste in state spending, adding a new expense won't help the problem. -- Ted Wright Oct. 9, 2010 If anyone else has an opinion on this topic (for or against) they are welcome to purchase an ad here. |
