2010 Memory Walk T-Shirt Design
For August 28th Memory Walk

Announces New 5-K Run as Part of August 28 Event on ORU Campus

TULSA, OK (July 14, 2010) – A design created by Tulsan Johnny King was unveiled today as the official look for the Alzheimer’s Association 2010 Tulsa Memory Walk T-shirt. The Association also announced that a 5-K run is part of this year’s fundraising event.
King’s design was selected by a panel of eight community judges from entries in a contest that was announced April 15.
Jennifer Palmer, a Memory Walk Committee special advisor, revealed the artwork at noon during the Memory Walk’s leadership team meeting and presented the winner’s prize to King – a check for $1,000.
“It’s a great design,” Palmer said. “And although I’m not a T-shirt wearer, I’ll wear this one. I certainly hope it helps the journey to find a cure for Alzheimer’s disease.”
Nancy Gustine, Tulsa Memory Walk co-chair, said, “We hope our supporters wear the shirt on Walk day, Saturday, August 28, but we also want them to proudly wear it throughout the year. It is a way to communicate that Tulsans understand the growing prevalence of Alzheimer’s disease and that we’re taking action to help the medical community move closer to finding a cure.”
King’s design features the Alzheimer’s walk/run figure taking bold steps across a field created from a repeating pattern of the Association’s logo. The symbol represents the organization’s dual mission of people and science, and a commitment that guides its daily work in research, advocacy, education and support.
The T-shirt design contest was a first for the Tulsa Memory Walk. In past years, supporters have worn a design provided by the national office. The Memory Walk is a nation-wide event, and it is the association’s No. 1 means to raise financial support.
Erin and John Peters, co-chairs for Tulsa’s first Alzheimer’s Run in conjunction with the Memory Walk, said that the 5-K race is a United States of America Track and Field (USATF) sanctioned course and will be Champion Chip timed.
“Runners can register online at www.tulsamemorywalk.org. The pre-registration fee is $25.00, and all entry fees include the T-shirt and race packet.” Erin Peters said. “Packets can be picked up at RunnersWorld, 4329 S. Peoria Ave., from August 23 through 27, or at ORU on race day.”
All Memory Walk participants who raise $100 or more also receive a free shirt. There are two walk options: one is 3 miles and the other is 0.8 miles.
Tulsan and Alzheimer’s Association National Board Member, Jackie Kouri, said she was not surprised the committees have added the T-shirt design contest and 5-K run as new components this year efforts. “Tulsa is ranked as one of the top five chapters in the nation for program innovation, fundraising and chapter management. It has served regional families for 27 years and often takes creative steps to communicate its mission.”
The Memory Walk and 5-K run will take place Saturday, August 28. Both will begin and finish on the Oral Roberts University campus, located on S. Lewis Ave. at 71st Street. The run begins at 8 a.m. and walk follows at 9:30 a.m.
