4-Her’s Help Military Kids

Dairy Capitol 4-H Club members are working hard to do their part to help National Guard Military Kids. On Sunday December 6, 3 club members and 3 club volunteers donated their time to help Santa brighten the Christmas season for military kids at Tulsa’s Air National Guard 138th Fighter Wing. The 4-H members and volunteers operated the craft tables at the Children’s Christmas Party, sponsored by the Air Guard Unit’s Family Readiness Group (FRG). They helped the children of the Guard members make reindeer, elf and Santa ornaments, decorate Christmas tree cards and stamp goodie bags while the children were waiting patiently to see Santa. This was the 5th year that the Dairy Capitol has helped Santa and the FRG with the craft tables. FRG members enjoy and appreciate the assistance of the 4-H members, according to FRG Treasurer Beth Davis, “I enjoy it when the kids from 4-H help at the Christmas party. They always have neat crafts for the children to do, that make cute items for the children to give as gifts. The kids from 4-H are very helpful and patient with the children.”

Volunteering at the Christmas Party is only one of the 2 ways this 4-H Club is doing what they can to help support our nation’s military children. The Dairy Capitol 4-H Club also has collection boxes set up around Collinsville to collect items for Hero Packs and a display at the Collinsville library highlighting the importance of Hero Packs to the National Guard/Reserve military kids.

In normal every day life National Guard/Reserve kids are just like every other kid on the street or in the classroom. Then Mom or Dad are activated and called upon to leave their family and jobs to do a tour of duty overseas, the children suddenly become military kids with very few or no other military kids on their street or in their class. Everything has changed for them and yet, many things are still the same. Teachers, neighbors and friends often times do not see the “new” child that is created by this abrupt change in the child’s life.

Operation Military Kids saw a need to support these new military kids through their transition and launched the Hero Pack program. Hero Packs provide the military kids with 5 basic needs by providing: comfort, entertainment, support, information and communication tools.

The Dairy Capitol 4-H collection boxes can used to drop off donations of stuffed toys (comfort), decks of cards or small hand games (entertainment), stationary, stamps, postcards or disposable cameras (communication tools.) The boxes can be found at the following businesses in Collinsville: Attitudes Dance Studio, Family Pharmacy, Silver Dollar Café and the Collinsville Library. A donation box is also located at Faith Lutheran Church in Owasso. Donations will be accepted through the month of December.
