Press Release: Kohl's Cares For Kids Store Winner Is A Local Girl

This year, through the Kohl's Kids Who Care® Scholarship Program, Kohl's Department Stores (NYSE: KSS) plans to award more than $350,000 in scholarships and prizes to recognize the selfless acts of more than 2,000 youth ages six through 18 who are making a difference in their communities. With the cost of tuition rising at nearly three times the rate of family income and student borrowing for college more than doubling over the last decade*, scholarships are more important than ever to help families make post-secondary education accessible to their children.
“In communities across the country, kids are inspiring those around them with their leadership, passion, ingenuity and generosity," said Julie Gardner, Kohl's executive vice president and chief marketing officer. “Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarship Program gives us the privilege to acknowledge their accomplishments and reward them with scholarships and prizes to continue doing great things in the future despite these challenging economic times."

This year the Kohl's Kids Who Care Store winner is Brinkley Dawn Howard of Collinsville. Brinkley is the 8 year old daughter of Chuck and Rusti Howard, the sister to Tyler Howard and the granddaughter to Don and Carolyn Brinkley and Virgil and Barbara Howard. Brinkley won the local store competition for her tireless effort to raise money for the now Ward Wiseman Animal Haven of Collinsville. For the past 3 years, Brinkley has drawn colored photographs and sold them, gave her tooth fairy money and had a birthday party where instead of the children bringing her gifts they brought gifts for the animal shelter. She has even appeared with Susan Babbitt of the Ward Wiseman Animal Haven on Fox 23 News showing animals that are from the shelter in need of adoption. Brinkley has literally helped with this project from the ground up and that is why she is this years winner.

The Kohl's Kids Who Care Scholarship Program is part of Kohl's Cares for Kids, Kohl's philanthropic program focused on improving the lives of children. Kohl's Cares for Kids benefits children's health and education initiatives nationwide through its merchandise program, featuring books and plush, fundraising gift cards and the A-Team associate volunteer program.
