When Paula Denson (right, signing her book) and her childhood friend Susan Babbitt (left) were growing up in Ponca City they were unaware of international events that took place there during World War II. A $2 purchase of a box of letters years later started a process of discovery that has resulted in 4 trips to England for Paula and now a book. That book ("The Royal Air Force In Oklahoma") retells the story of British RAF cadets that came to America to attend 6 secret flying schools between 1941 and 1945. Two schools were in Oklahoma (Ponca City & Miami) and the others were in Florida, Texas, Arizona and California. Many of those pilots died in the war within 2-3 months of leaving the U.S. Those that survived are in their 80's now. Most live in England but a few returned to the U.S. and married. (More Info)

Piano Duo to Perform in Concert

On Wednesday, March 21, the Tulsa Performing Arts Center will once again feature the piano team of Mary Sallee and Joan Hatley in concert for their noon Brown-Bag-It Concert Series. The concerts begin at 12:10 in the Kathleen Westby Pavillion in the Tulsa Performing Arts Center. The duo will perform music for one piano-four hands by Bizet, Wagner, Ewazen, Durand and Sallee. The program will include the Processional from Sallee's Modern Wedding Cantata, a 2000 commission by the Oklahoma Music Teachers Association. The duo will also pay tribute to the Oklahoma Centennial, including Sallee's arrangement of Variations on the Birthday Song.

Sallee, a native of Collinsvile, is owner of Sallee Piano Studio in Norman and is a composer and arranger for the Alfred Publishing Company. Hatley resides in Tulsa, where she accompanies for the Tulsa Oratorio Chorus and serves as director of the Cherub Choir at Boston Avenue Methodist Church.
