On Jan. 4th, 2004, OU will play LSU in the Sugar Bowl for the BCS National Championship of college football. OU has played in 5 previous Sugar Bowls, the last being in Dec 1972. They defeated Penn State 14-0. OU's coach was Chuck Fairbanks. Penn State was coached by Joe Paterno. That was the only bowl game I ever attended and the only play I recall vividly is a fake punt by OU's Joe Wiley. OU actually played in the Sugar Bowl twice in 1972 as they also defeated Auburn there in Jan 1972. The other three OU Sugar Bowl appearances were in 1949, 1950 and 1951 under Coach Bud Wilkinson. OU beat UNC in 1949 and LSU in 1950. The only loss was to Bear Bryant coached Kentucky in 1951.

The 2004 game will be in New Orlean's Super Dome which was under construction in 1972 (photo above).
The 1972 game was played in Tulane Stadium (photo below).

More Sugar Bowl History
Apologies to OSU & TU fans as I have no personal bowl history for those schools. The Sugar Bowl site did show Oklahoma A&M did win the 1946 Sugar Bowl over St. Mary's in the only "OSU" appearance. Tulsa lost twice in the Sugar Bowl: to Tennessee in 1943 and Georgia Tech in 1944.
