Local Bull Rider Draws Sponsorship from an Unlikely Arena

Collinsville, Oklahoma, September 23, 2008 – When local resident, 21-year-old Mike Short, currently a student at OSU, took the time to answer a message from an unknown author on MySpace, he never dreamed it would ultimately lead to sponsorship for his amateur bull riding career, but that’s exactly what happened.

The subject line of the MySpace message read, “This is not spam, just the act of a desperate author”. The rest went on to explain that the multi-published novelist was deep into writing a romance featuring rodeo cowboys as the heroes when she realized that online research wasn’t going to be enough. She needed a real life cowboy to answer her questions and asked if he would be interested in helping. Short agreed and the cross-country online collaboration between the two began.

“During one of our conversations on Instant Messenger, I asked Mike how often he gets to ride and he told me not as often as he’d like because of how expensive it can get between entrance fees and gasoline,” author Johnson explains. “The thought of sponsorship didn’t occur to me until a few days later during a book signing while I was discussing marketing and PR strategies with some fellow authors. When the idea hit me, I was so excited I couldn’t wait to get home and ask Mike if he’d consider it. Rodeo sponsors are usually manly companies, like Jack Daniels or Ford. I was afraid he would say no.”

But Short immediately said yes to the sponsorship offer. He plans to fill his calendar with local competitions where he will now ride while clad in a denim shirt embroidered with www.catjohnson.net, his new sponsor’s website.

The romance book Johnson penned using Short’s rodeo expertise will be titled Rough Stock after the bucking bronco and bull riding divisions of rodeo competition, and will be released by Linden Bay Romance, LLC on December 1st of this year. Based on some of Short’s suggestions and ideas, Johnson is currently working on another romance set in the rodeo world and so, the unlikely partnership continues.
