Governor Henry Proclaims October 1-8 “Oklahoma Main Street Week”

OKLAHOMA CITY – Gov. Brad Henry issued a proclamation (Sept. 28th) declaring Oct. 1-8 “Oklahoma Main Street Week,” applauding community volunteers.

The proclamation cites the Oklahoma Main Street Program as a nationally recognized model for revitalizing historic downtowns and neighborhood business districts. The program employs the Four-Point Approach of organization, promotion, design and economic restructuring.

“More than 10,000 new jobs have been created and more than 3,300 businesses have started or expanded across the state thanks to the efforts of community volunteers who have taken back their downtowns,” Henry said.

As part of the Oklahoma Department of Commerce, the program has provided training and technical assistance to participating communities since November 1985. More than $547 million has been invested in Main Street downtowns in the state and more than 8,600 buildings have been rehabilitated, Henry said.

Today, 43 communities, including three urban districts, participate in the state program.
