Voted To Move Collinsville From Rogers County Into Tulsa County

While I'm waiting for the polls to close at 7pm today (Feb. 14, 2006) for the school bond election results ... I reflect on a story I found from 1918 when citizens from Collinsville were in a sort of no-mans land in the process of switching from Rogers to Tulsa County. This story in P.M. Eyler's "The Collinsville Star" indicated the city attorney could find no precedent on voting in a county you weren't a part of yet. Collinsville had been in Rogers County from statehood in November 1907 until the switch in 1918. They had voted and failed in 1911 for the same switch. Based on the story below from W. L. Wright's "The Collinsville News" just before statehood in 1907, not everyone was looking forward to traveling to Claremore as the new county seat when the train ride to Tulsa was so convenient. -- Ted Wright
There are many more stories in the archives of the Newspaper Museum In Collinsville relating to statehood and the county switch so check back as we approach Oklahoma's Centennial year for statehood in 2007. -- Ted
