One thing I was wondering about ... with the Fill-The-Bus coming after the start of classes if there needed to be any message to parents or kids about what supplies they needed on Aug 17th -vs- waiting to see what might be provided from the bus effort? -- Ted
Ted --
Let me see if I can answer your questions. On August 17, the first day of school, students will be returning to school with their supplies in hand. Those supplies are from the supply lists provided from the schools (and places like Wal-Mart, etc.). Those supplies are what you would consider the typical school supplies -- crayons, pencils, notebook paper, etc. Fill the Bus is designed to help fill the teachers' classrooms with the additional supplies that they need -- such as clorox wipes, dry erase markers, batteries, etc. Historically, teachers have placed "wish trees" outside their classroom doors the first week of school and left it up the parents to provide the extra things they need. The PTO wanted to take a little financial pressure of the students' families and let the community pitch in... therefore, the Fill the Bus idea. Originally, we had wanted Fill the Bus to be before school started. But when we heard that Founder's Day was just after the start, we thought that might help Downtown by bringing more families to that event. After Founder's Day was cancelled, we decided to just leave it on Aug. 26 since that is the last day of the Fair, plus it gives everyone about 10 days (and maybe one more paycheck) after the first day of school.

Also, many teachers provide "regular" school supplies for their students that do not have any, and we wanted to help relieve some of the expenses for the teachers because most people will buy regular school supplies to donate.

Thanks!
