Construction at the middle school and high school moved one step closer to actually starting when the City Board of Adjustment approved special exceptions and variances Monday Sept. 13th.
The "exception" permits the middle school construction / expansion on property zoned residential single-family. There has been a school on this property since at least 1909 when the first Collinsville High School was built. The "variances" are for parking on easements and building set backs less than normal residential. The middle school expansion will add a new cafeteria / commons, 9 classrooms, offices and a media center on the north portion of the block bounded by Spring, 14th, Center, and 15th. There will be a bus loading zone on the south side of Center, a parent drop off zone on 14th, and new off street parking in front of the gym on Center.

The addition of six new class rooms at the high school on 10 new acres recently purchased west of the existing high school required an exception to allow construction / expansion on property zoned AG Agriculture District. A fire lane will be constructed from the current school parking to the new building for fire department access but no additional parking is planned.

The City Board of Adjustment members (L-R facing the camera) Ron Scott, Gerald Branen, Connie Goad, Kyle Smalygo, and Shannon Stubblefield listen to City Planner Bob Wolfram with school officials Terrry Due and Craig Creech in the audience. The board members all voted to approve the special exceptions and variances.
A representative from Sparks (the school's architects) presented a summary to the board of adjustment for both the middle school and high school construction plans.
